Why Do We Need Emergency Lighting?

Emergency lighting plays a critical role in ensuring life safety first in any building during power failures or emergencies. When regular lighting systems fail, emergency lighting steps in to provide visibility, guiding occupants safely to exits. Its main purpose is to minimise panic in high-stress situations by clearly illuminating escape routes, corridors, and exits, allowing for smooth evacuation.

In addition, well-placed emergency lighting is essential to help first responders navigate through the building efficiently, enhancing their ability to assist in rescue operations. Beyond safety, having an effective emergency lighting system is also a matter of compliance. Many local building regulations and safety codes mandate the installation of emergency lighting systems to ensure that buildings are prepared to handle crises, protecting both lives and property.

Four Main Types of Emergency Lighting

There are four primary types of emergency lighting, each serving a distinct purpose to enhance safety:

  1. Escape Route Lighting: This type ensures that escape routes such as corridors, staircases, and doorways are well-lit, allowing occupants to safely exit the building. It highlights the path to safety and directs people to exits without confusion.
  2. Open Area Lighting: Also known as anti-panic lighting, this type is designed for large open spaces like lobbies, assembly areas, or halls. Its purpose is to prevent panic by providing adequate lighting in large areas, enabling people to move safely toward escape routes.
  3. High Risk Task Area Lighting: This lighting is crucial for areas where hazardous tasks or activities are performed. It ensures that critical tasks can continue safely or be shut down appropriately during an emergency, protecting both equipment and personnel.
  4. Stay Put / Emergency Safety Lighting: In certain scenarios, occupants may need to remain in place rather than evacuate. Stay put lighting provides illumination in designated safe zones, allowing people to wait safely until the emergency is resolved or until first responders arrive.
