SEO once promised a beacon of hope for visibility. Now, it's a path to frustration.
For most small businesses and start-ups, it's a long wait, long-term, long-shot strategy.
Here's the journey most small businesses go through before they realise there's a better way.
If I can save just 1 business from this painful journey, then this article was worth it.
Part 1: You set up a website.
A huge moment in business - it makes you feel like your business is real.
But then yo realise that you've just been swallowed by the vastness of the internet.
Part 2: Investing in SEO Expertise
You wait a month, maybe two and you begin to realise nobody is knocking on your door.
"It must be Search Engine Optimisation", you think.
You google yourself, and you're nowhere to be seen.
You explore SEO - it's a technical rabbit hole
So you seek expert advice.
The advisor reveals a harsh truth: Your keywords are owned by giants.
The suggested detour? Chase after less-searched, long-tail keywords. It's a gamble with dim prospects.
You also jump through hoops to get your "website SEO optimised" - but time passes without benefit.
Part 3: You explore the paid-traffic route
"You'll only pay per click," you're promised.
So, you fork out cash you haven't earned yet.
You start with a budget that's conservative but still enough to sting.
You pay for tons of clicks. When you see the real stats, you see that users spent just seconds on your website, and nobody booked a call.
You find out your ads appeared in so many irrelevant places, and you wonder how many of those clicks were accidental.
Now that you've been bitten, you're weary of trying again, so you pause your ads.
More time has passed, and your runway is shorter.
Part 4: You invest in content creation.
Considering page 7 on Google as your new home? Far from appealing.
Content creation emerges as a beacon of hope.
So, you begin blogging. After 20 articles, you realise it's a crowded arena.
Part 5: You dabble with AI-generated content
Enter AI-generated content, the new norm.
However, it makes you blend in, not stand out.
Your unique voice? Lost in a sea of uniformity. You're just as unremarkable as the rest.
You risk becoming indistinguishable, echoing the same AI-generated monotone as everyone else.
Is any of this familiar?
So many businesses follow this path.
The insult:
Your business actually offers a valuable service that people need. You should be signing on clients, but you're not.
How many more months of this can you take?
Still, you cant resign to digital invisibility. If you knew the right strategy, you'd do it, wouldn't you?
THE TRUTH
The digital landscape has evolved. Traditional SEO tactics are now relics.
2024 demands innovation, not adherence to outdated strategies.
The quest for visibility now requires breaking from the SEO mould. I still believe SEO has its place, but for a start-up or small business, it's a herculean, long-term campaign, and you probably don't have the runway to wait for whatever it promises to deliver.
